Fabric reinforced seals are fabricated from high performance silicone, fluorosilicone, fluorocarbon or various other elastomers reinforced with a variety of fabrics. Polyester, aramid, ceramic and fiberglass fabrics can be embedded in the body of the product or as a surface cover. The resulting composite has superior strength and abrasion resistance over rubber alone.
Applications include coupling boots, fuselage and hatch seals, aerodynamic sealing of airfoil surfaces and jet engine compressor stages. Firewall seals made from composites of high temperature silicone and combinations of aramid, ceramic and fiberglass fabrics which retards propagation of direct flame in jet engines.
